Film-concert Jewish Luck

On October 11, 2013 the Jewish-Gypsy band from Kiev, Pushkin Klezmer Band presented film-concert Jewish Luck at the Center for Contemporary Art M17.

Jewish Luck is a silent comedy filmed in 1925 directed by Alexander Granovsky, with Solomon Mikhoels in the title role, and with intertitres written by Isaac Babel. The film is based on a story “Menachem Mendel” written by Sholom – Aleichem.
This film  – a real blockbuster of that times – was filmed in Ukraine, mostly in Berdychev, Vynnytsa, Odessa, and Kremenchug.
New music for film was written and arranged by Mitya Gerasimov, the leader of the accompanying musicians group: Mitya Gerasimov (clarinet), Igor Sidash (piano), Taras Kozak (drums). Old Jewish melodies and original music (as well as experience of contemporary cine-concerts) were used for composing this live soundtrack: We want to make this wonderful old film be watched with pent breath. We added the missing dimension – the sound – in order to make it as anew.

This project is supported by the Genesis Philanthropy Group as a part of the charity program of the CAF Russia, Jewish Communities.
